WHY NO LATINO SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE UPSTATE?…CALVO-TORRES ASKS
In the past when Latinos ran for office in WNY, those who didn’t want to back them had an excuse: They could simply point out that Candidate A or B simply doesn’t have the united backing of the local Hispanic community. Now Buffalo City Court Judge Betty Calvo-Torres has changed all that. This daughter of a single Dominican mother who grew up in poverty in New York City has won the support of every single Latino organization in WNY in her current Supreme Court race.
How has she done it?
First of all, by being a universally respected judge, of course…But also by fearlessly advocating for the WNY Latino community.
“The Latino community is simply NOT proportionately represented in public office in WNY,” she declares. “There is no excuse for the fact that there is not a single Hispanic Supreme Court Justice in all of upstate New York. It just isn’t right! I’m the candidate of diversity and fair representation in this race. ”
Having seen the greeting she was given at Sunday’s Greasepole Festival in Buffalo, it’s clear that few represent the perspective and experience of local Latinos as well as Betty Calvo-Torres.
“When I told the 1,500 people I spoke to at the Greasepole Festival the things I’ve talked about in this interview, they cheered. They went wild,” she reports. “I addressed them as ‘Boricua!’ (‘Puerto Ricans’) and they replied with the word, ‘Palante,’ which means ‘Keep Moving Forward!’…The Latinos of WNY can not be ignored any more. Young Latinos should be able to see people who look like them when they look up at judges sitting on the bench. We must be represented fairly on the Supreme Court of upstate New York and, if I’m elected, we will be.”
